August 18, 1998 will always be the start of my new life….
I started Concert to Cure in 2005 with the intention of giving back for the life I have received as a transplant recipient. To date we have had four successful concerts giving money to Camp Trillium, the Delhi Community Health Centre, the Delhi Sharing Pantry, a young cancer patient, who is doing very well to this day, and a fundraiser for a young lady named Kaitlynn Hantz in 2011. As I was battling kidney failure at the time at Toronto General hospital, we had a representative from our Concert to Cure line-up singing there as we gave $100.00 towards the cause. On August 16, 2014 we will be hosting our fifth Concert to Cure at the Delhi Golf & Country Club from 7 pm – midnight. The cost will be $10 per person which will go towards finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.
The date is very important to me, as it exemplifies my role in honouring my first double lung transplant. It also brings so much happiness to me as my daughter Christina graduates from her dental hygiene program from Niagara College in the month of August 2014. As you know, we have three children, but our little girl was in grade one when I was waiting and had my first transplant. Who would have thought I would be here today to see that?
We all have goals in life, mine was to live long enough to see the children grow up and become a better version of their mom and me. I am so proud of all three of them, Clarence our middle son is married, and Dorothy, well let’s just say she does not get the credit she deserves for keeping the family strongly bonded together.
Many of you have seen or read about me in the papers or on facebook. I have been called a miracle. Truth be told, none of this would be possible without my donor families, my family and the close friendships I have made over the years.
I hope you will come out to support Concert to Cure V on August 16, 2014 at the Delhi Golf & Country Club, as there is a great line-up of musical talent and much we could learn about Cystic Fibrosis and how to become an Organ & Tissue Donor.
